Statement on the 25th EU-China Summit

Background

On 24th July, the 25th EU-China Summit took place in Beijing, China. President of the European Council, António Costa, and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the Summit, at which they discussed topics of political and economic importance.

The meeting culminated in the release of a joint-statement on climate.

Stance

Overall, the EU-China Summit exceeded expectations and the European Chamber notes several positive outcomes from the event, namely that:

  • a joint-statement was issued confirming a mutual commitment to tackling climate change; and
  • both sides agreed to create an upgraded export supply mechanism.

The European Chamber hopes the Summit will set the stage for further talks, including at the technical level. This will be needed for tangible progress to be made on challenges faced by businesses, to pave the way for a more equitable trade and investment relationship.
